THE WANSHAN ARCHIVE

Red earth.
Living memory.

A material history shaped by the mountains of Tongren, Guizhou—and carried forward through objects made for the present.

Before it was an object, it was a landscape.

CHAPTER 01 · WANSHAN

Before it was an object, it was a landscape.

Wanshan’s story begins underground. For generations, tunnels were cut through the mountains of northeastern Guizhou in search of cinnabar, the brilliant red mineral known chemically as mercury sulfide.

The mines shaped local work, movement and memory. Today, the surviving tunnels and industrial sites are reminders that material culture is never separate from place. VERMISHAN begins here—not by recreating the past, but by acknowledging the landscape behind the colour.

A red that refuses to be ordinary.

CHAPTER 02 · THE MINERAL

A red that refuses to be ordinary.

Cinnabar has long been valued for its intense vermilion colour. Under light, its reds can move from dark wine and iron-rich crimson to brighter scarlet. Veining, inclusions and surface differences make uniformity the exception rather than the rule.

VERMISHAN treats this variation as visual character. We never use colour alone as proof of origin, purity or grade, and each product page identifies the actual composition of the finished piece.

VERMISHAN PRINCIPLE

Heritage is a discipline, not a costume.

We study circles, seals, mineral strata and the geometry of mine architecture. Each reference is simplified until it feels quiet, balanced and useful in contemporary life.

The result is not a replica of a historical object. It is a modern piece that carries origin through colour, proportion and surface.

Old references, edited for the present.

CHAPTER 03 · FORM

Old references, edited for the present.

Traditional relief carving can be dense with symbolism. Our approach is to clarify it: reduce the border, open the negative space, control the depth and let one strong silhouette hold the composition.

Dark textile cords, warm metal details and black stone-like grounds keep the vermilion surface central. Every decision is intended to make the work wearable and architectural rather than theatrical.

Made to live beyond the display case.

CHAPTER 04 · DAILY LIFE

Made to live beyond the display case.

A meaningful object should still belong to everyday life. Bead scale is balanced for comfort; pendants sit close to the body; studio objects are proportioned for shelves, desks and cabinets.

We design without medical, healing, luck, energy or supernatural claims. The value of the piece is found in its material story, the precision of its form and the personal meaning given by its owner.

Respect begins with clear information.

CHAPTER 05 · RESPONSIBILITY

Respect begins with clear information.

Cinnabar is mercury sulfide. Finished pieces should never be heated, burned, ground, drilled, sanded or ingested. They are not food, medicine or toys, and damaged pieces should be kept away from children and pets.

We state composition and care guidance on every product page. Clean finished pieces only with a soft dry cloth, avoid chemicals and prolonged moisture, and store each piece separately.
